Summary

This project aims at studying several open problems in information theory regarding communication systems in which the traditional single link communication paradigm does not apply anymore. The project objectives are summarised in the following three general objectives:

Analysis of the information theory limits in generalised multichannel communications with imperfect channel state information both in the receiver and in the transmitter. Specifically, the multiple access channel, the broadcast channel, the interference channel, channel with relays and multi-link channels will be evaluated.

Analysis of the information theory limits in cooperative communication networks such that several terminals may relay the information sent by the source terminal to the destination terminal in order to enhance the transmission. This objective integrates the last year of the TEC2004-04526 project ECO: Transmisión cooperativa para sistemas de comunicación inalámbricos de banda ancha, whose principal investigator is Josep Vidal, Co-PI of this proposal.

Analysis of the information theory limits in sensor networks, and in self-organised networks as well, assuming correlation in the information transmitted by the nodes. In addition, the design of optimal transmission structures and optimal rate allocation algorithms for sensor networks with energy constraints will be studied.
