Summary

The design of future wireless communications systems delivering high bitrates is currently being planned through the use of ever increasing carrier frequencies and larger bandwidths. At these frequencies, the path loss is more important than for the second generation systems and, as a consequence, an effective geographic coverage implies a higher density of base stations (or access points) and an increased cost of the infrastructure. Density increase will consequently lead to an increase of the offered bandwidht per square km which most likely will not be utilized according to the expected demands. In this situation, the operators are incurring a high risk.

To remedy this situation it is necessary to design new transmission schemes able to overcome the tradeoff between coverage and bitrate. The schemes proposed in this project are able to achieve this by dropping the paradigm of communication between two players (transmitter and receiver) just by introducing one (or many) third players that cooperate with the transmitter and acts as relay. This cooperative transmission principle builds in practice a virtual array of antennas (MIMO) yielding, not only the known benefits in terms of capacity - coverage (or both), but also macrodiversity and hence robusteness to shadowing.
