Biography
Olga Muñoz (an IEEE senior member) obtained her Ph.D. in 1998 and has been an Associate Professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) since 2001. She was a Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford University in 2014. From January 2022 to June 2025, she served as the scientific coordinator of the Signal Processing for Communications (SPCOM) research group, recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a consolidated research group, comprising 20 researchers, 13 of whom are permanent professors at UPC. Since January 2022, she has been the Associate Director for Studies and Coordinator of the Ph.D. program of the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at UPC, http://www.tsc.upc.edu. In April 2024, she obtained the CU accreditation (Full Professor) from ANECA.
She has published 26 articles in indexed journals (23 of them in the first and second quartiles, Q1-Q2, of the JCR) and three book chapters, in addition to numerous technical reports (more than 60). She has also published over 60 conference papers, 23 of which correspond to Class 2 conferences in the GII-GRIN-SCIE ranking: ICASSP, ICC, PIMRC, GlobeCom, VTC, and WCNC. She is a co-author of two patents. She has supervised three doctoral theses and has been awarded four positive research evaluation periods (sexenios).
She has been Principal Investigator of 4 competitively awarded projects (3 in the last 10 years). In addition to leading these 4 projects, she has participated in 16 other competitively awarded projects (9 international, 4 national, and 3 regional) and one Next-Generation EU-funded project.
Throughout her career, she has accumulated extensive experience in multi-hop networks and multi-point transmission (cooperative) networks through her work on European Commission-funded projects such as ROMANTIK (5th Framework Programme), FIREWORKS (6th Framework Programme), and ROCKET (7th Framework Programme). Her experience in heterogeneous networks with access points of different types and different coverage sizes is supported by her work on the European project FREEDOM (7th Framework Programme) and the national project MOSAIC (2010 call), in which she was the Principal Investigator. She also worked on the European project TROPIC (7th Framework Programme), promoting the integration of cloud computing with small cell networks, and on the European project TUCAN3G (7th Framework Programme), focused on providing connectivity to isolated rural areas by combining wireless technologies in the access network with WiLD (WiFi for Long Distances) and satellite backhaul. Within these projects, she co-authored 10 contributions to international standards. Subsequently, she focused on designing, analyzing, and evaluating radio technologies in ultra-dense networks with distributed intelligence in the national project 5G-RUNNER (TEC2016), of which she was Principal Investigator, and in the European project 5G-Wireless (H2020). More recently, she has worked on the evolution from 5G to 6G in the national project ROUTE56 (2019 call) and the European project PREDICT-6G (Horizon Europe Programme). Currently, she is working on millimeter-wave transmission based on massive MIMO systems and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces within the framework of the national project 6SENSES (PID2022), of which she is Principal Investigator.
