Jose A. Lopez-Salcedo was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1978. He received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunication Engineering and the Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in July 2001 and July 2004, respectively.

Before graduating, he served as a member of the Executive Board of the Barcelona IEEE Student Branch from 1998 to 2000. From 1998 to 2004 he served as an Associate Editor of the student magazine IEEE Buran, published by the Barcelona IEEE Student Branch and delivered within the IEEE Spanish Section and IEEE Region 9.

His Master's Thesis was related with the "Design, Simulation and Implementation of a Satellite On-Board DVB Digital Receiver" for Alcatel Espacio S.A., Madrid (Spain) within a R&D project at the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at UPC, and co-authored with Andreu Urruela . Special attention was given to the design of advanced joint phase & frequency synchronization algorithms for space applications.

In September 2001, he joined the Communication Signal Processing Group, where he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree entitled "Low-SNR Maximum Likelihood Techniques in Ultra-Wideband and Free-Spectrum Communications".

In the recent years, Jose A. Lopez-Salcedo serves as a reviewer for many international journals such as the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Signal Processing Magazine.

On May 2003, Jose A. Lopez-Salcedo received the IEEE STG Award from the IEEE Communications Society for the paper "Stochastic Approach to Square Timing Estimation with Frequency Uncertainty" presented at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

Since September 2006, he is with the Applied Communication Theory Group at the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB).

Current research interests: Statistical signal processing in communications with application to UWB systems. Estimation and detection theory. Synchronization in digital communications.

Research activity

Since 2001, Jose A. Lopez-Salcedo has been involved in many R&D projects with private industry and public administrations. Some of these R&D projects are briefly summarized herein:

  • Development of an Adaptive DVB-RCS1 / DVB-S2 On Board Processing System for Meshed Communications with Alcatel-Alenia Space España for the European Space Agency (ESA).

  • Development of a Frequency-Hopping Modem for Satellite Communications with Indra Espacio S.A.

  • Contribution to the ESTEC Technical Proposal for the Spread Spectrum In-Orbit Testing (IOT) System with Indra Espacio S.A.. Preliminary study for the design of an input-output response testing for satellite transponders in the presence of traffic.

  • Study and Development of Signal Processing Algorithms for DS-CDMA Communications Systems with MPSK Modulation with Indra Espacio S.A.. Development of carrier recovery techniques for spread-spectrum systems under extremely low-SNR scenarios.

  • Study of TT&C Techniques for Digital Transponders with Alcatel Espacio S.A., and the ESA. Development of timing and carrier recovery algorithms for the TT&C signalling format of ESA.

  • GALILEO-SAT (Phase I and Phase II) with Alcatel Espacio S.A., and the ESA. Development of synchronization strategies for timing acquisition and tracking.

  • IST-2000-25091 IBIS. "Integrated Broadcast Interaction System". OBP receivers applied to the delivery of Internet content and digital television.

  • IST-2000-30116 FITNESS. "Fourth-generation Intelligent Transparent Networks Enhanced through Space-time Systems". Analysis on the extension of Turbo-Coding to MIMO channels within the HIPERLAN/2 standard.

  • DVB-Forward (A9343) with Alcatel Espacio S.A. and the ESA. Design of receiver architectures for demultiplexation and demodulation of a multicarrier on-board processing satellite communication system. Some of the tasks carried out within this project comprised the evaluation of polyphasic structures for demultiplexation, and the implementation up to the bit level of parallel phase and frequency acquisition techniques for ensuring a non-data-aided robust performance for low SNR scenarios. The resulting system can be found to be implemented in the AmerHis payload included in the Amazonas communication satellite, from the spanish consortium Hispasat.
