Biography

Alba Pagès-Zamora received the M.S. degree in 1992 and the PhD degree in 1996, both in Electrical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelonatech (UPC), Spain. In 1992 she joined the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at the same University and became an Associate Professor in 2001. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate, theoretical and lab courses related to Signal Processing, Digital Communications and Matrix Algebra. Her current research interests include localization in emergency situations, distributed signal processing over dynamic networks (diffusion and consensus strategies), communication in wireless sensor networks and applications for MIMO channel wireless communications.

She is author of one book chapter, 12 papers in international periodic journals and about 50 papers in international conferences (Public profile at Google Scholar). She has been reviewer of IEEE Transaction on Signal Processing, EURASIP Signal Processing Journal and Ad Hoc Networks Elsevier. From February 2012 to the end of 2015 she has been Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and since February 2016 she is Senior Member of IEEE society.

Regarding European projects, she has been UPC’s principal investigator of FP7-SME-2012-1-315007 RESCUECELL (Portable Kit for Detecting Trapped and Buried People in Ruins and Avalanches) under the funding scheme of Research for the benefit of the SMEs from Jan. 2013 to Feb. 2015, and 6th FP IST-033914-STREP project WINSOC devoted to develop Wireless Sensor Networks with Self-Organization Capabilities for Critical and emergency Applications from Sep. 2007 to June 2009. From Nov. 2001 to Aug. 2003 she was UPC’s technical leader of 5th FP IST-2000-30148 I-METRA, and from March to Nov. 2004 for 6th FP IST-2001-37944 Network of Excellence project NEXWAY. She participated as researcher in IST-027187-STREP SURFACE since Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2008, and in IST-99-10322 SATURN from Jan. 2000 to June 2002.

Currently she is the principal investigator of TEC2013-41315-R DISNET national research project devoted to the study of distributed techniques for the management and operation of wireless cellular networks, sensor networks and the smart energy grid. She has also participated in 7 national scientific projects, was the leadership of 2 contracts with companies and participated in 3 additional contracts as investigator.

From November 2015 to July 2017 she was the coordinator of sustainability and social commitment of the electrical engineering school ETSETB at the UPC. From June 1005 to January 2007 she was the academic director of ERASMUS MUNDUS Master of Science in Research on Information and Communication Technologies (MERIT), the research master programme of the Dept. of Signal Theory and Communications at the UPC. In the Spring of 2009 she worked in the preparation of the proposal of the successful ERASMUS MUNDUS 2009-2013 Master of Science in Research on Information and Communication Technologies (MERIT) EMMC Joint Master Program. 

She has regularly been participating as evaluator for the Information Society and Media Directorate-General of the European Commission of research projects since 2007 (i.e, H2020-ICT30-2015, H2020-ICT-2014-2, FP7-ICT-2009-1, FP7-ICT-2007-1). She has also participated as reviewer of projects in the European Union 7th and 6th Framework Programme in the theme of Information and Communication Technologies. She was an evaluator of research projects of the Communications and Electronic Technologies (TEC) area within the National Research Plan of Spain of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) in 2008 and 2012, and also for the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) in 2010 and 2011. She was also the co-chairman of the CHIST-ERA Context and Content-Adaptive Communication Networks Evaluation Panel from February 2013 to June 2013.

During the 2010-2011 academic year she was on sabbatical within the IPR group at Fractus S.A., a technological company that designs, manufactures and licenses optimised antennas for mobile handsets, short-range wireless devices and telecommunications infrastructure by applying the science of fractal mathematics to antenna development. In Fractus, she gained experience in IPR management performing prosecution tasks of Fractus patent portfolio and giving technical support in the Fractus against Samsung trial thanks to her background on signal processing.
